Finding good pasta in central London feels impossible when surrounded by overpriced tourist traps everywhere. Pastaio London changed my entire perspective on dining in the city center.

I used to avoid central London restaurants like the plague after too many disappointing meals. This spot serves some of the best pasta I’ve had anywhere in London.

The team behind Pastaio decided central London needed affordable and exact Italian food finally. No pretentious vibes or fancy plating here at all. Just honest food made with care and served with genuine warmth throughout.

You won’t spend hours here but you’ll leave completely satisfied every single time. Ready to find your new favorite pasta spot?

Pastaio’s Dining Atmosphere

Pastaio keeps things simple with its modern dining room filled with lots of light. You sit at shared benches and tables with other people who love pasta too.

They don’t take reservations, but you just leave your name and go see the area. I went to old school pubs nearby for drinks while waiting for my table. My Friday night visit had people coming and going without feeling too packed at all.

The wait never felt weird or uncomfortable, like at some fancy London restaurants, honestly. This place doesn’t try to be fancy dining, and that makes it even better.

You get good food, and a relaxed space where nobody acts too seriously. Perfect for a quick meal that fills you up before heading back outside.

Pastaio’s Menu Breakdown

pastaio-s-menu-breakdown

The menu at Pastaio keeps things straightforward with three simple sections that work perfectly. You get starters, pastas, and desserts, but the real star is clearly the pasta:

Starters

The starters at Pastaio set a nice tone for the meal ahead. Charlotte and I were starving after a long Friday at work, so we went straight in:

  • Watermelon, yellow tomatoes, feta, and mint: This dish was all kinds of delicious and felt like summer on a plate.
  • Warm sourdough basket: The bread came with the starter and was good enough to eat by itself.
  • Burrata with olive oil, chilli and oregano: Fine but not the best burrata you’ll find at a restaurant.

My advice is to save your stomach space for the pasta if you’re not desperate for a starter. The many pasta options on the menu will make you want to order everything.

Pasta Selection

The pasta at Pastaio is where they really deliver on all fronts and shine. Charlotte and I shared five pasta dishes between us, which was a little excessive but worth it:

Pasta Dish Key Ingredients My Take
Spinach pasta Chilli, agretti, breadcrumbs, bottarga The bottarga added a salty fishy touch that was a real revelation
Ricotta ravioli Fresh pea, pea shoots, butter, parmesan This weekly special literally melted in your mouth with every single bite
Red prawn spaghetti Plenty of chilli, prawns in shells The juicy prawns were topped with a perfectly prepared simple sauce
Wild mushroom tagliatelle Garlic, parmesan, mushroom medley The excellent quality tagliatelle perfectly finished off our pasta feast
Rigatoni Slow-cooked tomato sauce, parmesan This one lacked a real wow factor, though it was still more than edible

I’m talking better than overhyped Padella, kind of good with full flavors, and exceptionally well-made pasta. Every pasta dish we ordered was so damn good that it was hard not to polish it all off.

Desserts

Dessert choices are a little more limited at Pastaio compared to the pasta selection. My cannoli struggled with too many flavors combined into one poor cannoli.

Nobody needs orange, pistachio, and chocolate in one dessert when one strong flavor would work better. Pastaio is all about the pasta, so skip the dessert and eat more pasta instead.

Wash everything down with one of their nicely priced wines or prosecco slushies instead for a fabulous dinner.

Pastaio Pricing Breakdown

I was genuinely surprised by how reasonable the prices were at Pastaio for central London. Charlotte and I shared five pasta dishes without feeling like we’d spent a fortune:

Dish Type Price Range Portion Size Value Assessment
Most Pasta Dishes Under £13 Generous and shareable Excellent value for central London location
Vongole Linguine £16 Generous and shareable Worth the extra cost for quality seafood
Starters £6-£10 Good for sharing Fair pricing, but save space for pasta
Desserts £5-£8 Standard single serving Limited options, skip and order more pasta
Wines Nicely priced By glass or bottle Affordable options to complement your meal
Prosecco Slushies Standard cocktail price Single serving Fun addition that won’t break the bank

Note: These prices are estimated and may vary. Check the current menu for exact pricing before your visit.

Service: Attentive and Fun

Charlotte and I had a very nice waitress who made our whole dinner experience even better. She made sure we felt properly looked after from the moment we sat down:

  • Well-informed and helpful: The waitress knew the menu inside out and answered all our questions with a smile.
  • Cheery and attentive waitress: She not only guided us through the menu but kept our water glasses full throughout.
  • Quick response to requests: Every extra request was immediately dealt with, and always with a smile to boost.
  • Made us feel cared for: There was not one second of dinner where we didn’t feel properly looked after.
  • Never felt rushed: The service was efficient,t but we never felt pushed to leave or hurry through our meal.

The service quality at Pastaio adds to the relaxed and fun atmosphere of the restaurant. You leave feeling well-fed and appreciated as a customer throughout your entire visit.

The Location Advantage At Pastaio

the-location-advantage-at-pastaio

Pastaio sits perfectly for anyone done with shopping on Regent or Carnaby Street. You find yourself in central London without many good dining options around, honestly.

The area feels geared towards tourists with overpriced chain restaurants like Wagamama everywhere you look.

Even worse are the Angus steak houses that rip off clueless tourists with crappy food. Pastaio stands out as a rare gem in this tourist-heavy zone. The vibe inside feels much more local and genuine compared to the surrounding spots.

I work near Covent Garden, so I understand the struggle of finding decent meals here. Pastaio now gives me a foolproof dining option when stuck in central London. You leave well-fed and ready to face the madness outside again.

Should You Try Pastaio?

Pastaio delivers honest, well sourced and authentic food without any pretense at all. This place doesn’t try to be fine dining and honestly it doesn’t need to be.

You get great service and a pleasant dining environment where everything just works smoothly. Charlotte and I left well fed and fully satisfied after our Friday night visit.

The belly full of pasta prepared us perfectly to re-enter the central London madness outside. You care about every step in the making of their pasta here and it shows.

Anyone with a love for Italian cooking will leave with a big smile on their face. The prices stay reasonable considering the central London location which makes it even better.

That’s a Wrap

Central London finally has a pasta spot that doesn’t disappoint or drain your wallet completely. Pastaio London proves you can get exceptional Italian food without the pretentious atmosphere or sky-high prices.

The care they put into every pasta dish shows from the first bite honestly. This restaurant makes guiding central London’s dining scene so much easier for anyone who works nearby.

You deserve better than overpriced chains when craving good pasta in the city center. Skip the tourist traps and head straight here for your next Italian food fix.
