A First-Timer’s Guide to Being a Bridesmaid

So your best friend just asked you to be a bridesmaid. You said yes without thinking twice, probably with tears and a hug and maybe a glass of prosecco. But now the initial excitement has settled, and you’re quietly wondering what you’ve actually signed up for. Don’t worry, because most first-timers go through the same thing. Here’s what to expect from start to finish, so you can enjoy every bit of it.

What a Bridesmaid Actually Does

Films and TV make it look like bridesmaids spend months crafting centrepieces and resolving dramatic love triangle subplots. Real life is a lot less cinematic. Your main job is to support the bride and help where you can.

That usually means being available for dress shopping, helping plan the hen do, and showing up on the wedding morning ready to pitch in. You might hold her bouquet during the ceremony, bustle her dress, or wrangle guests for photos. Some brides will give you a detailed list of tasks. Others won’t ask for much at all. Either way, the best thing you can do is check in regularly and ask what’s needed instead of waiting to be told.

How Dress Shopping Works in the UK

Bridesmaid dress shopping in the UK has changed a lot over the past decade. You’re unlikely to spend an entire Saturday trailing round department stores anymore. Most brides will narrow down a colour or style first, then share options with the group online.

Many UK brands now let you order fabric swatches before committing, so the whole group can check the colour in person. Maids to Measure is one of the more well-known names for this, with over 30 styles designed in London and a wide size range from 6 to 26. Once a style is picked, you’ll typically need to allow eight to twelve weeks for delivery, so don’t leave it until the last minute. If you’re between sizes, ask about the brand’s size guide early and get measured properly rather than guessing.

Budget for More Than Just the Dress

Here’s something nobody warns you about: being a bridesmaid costs more than you’d think. The dress is one expense, but there’s also shoes, accessories, hair, makeup, the hen do, a wedding gift, and sometimes travel and accommodation on top of that.

A realistic budget for a UK bridesmaid in 2026 will often land somewhere between £500 and £1,000, depending on the wedding. That might sound steep, but you can keep costs down by being upfront about your budget early on. Most brides would rather know than accidentally put you in a tight spot. And there’s absolutely no shame in suggesting a DIY hen activity instead of a weekend abroad.

Hen Party Expectations vs. Reality

Speaking of the hen do, it doesn’t have to be a three-day trip to Marbella. Plenty of brilliant hen parties happen in someone’s living room, at a local restaurant, or with a day activity like a cooking class or spa visit. The best ones match the bride’s personality, not a Pinterest board.

If you’re the maid of honour, you’ll probably take the lead on planning. If you’re one of several bridesmaids, just be willing to chip in with ideas and organisation. The golden rule is to keep the bride’s preferences at the centre of every decision. Ask her what she actually wants before you book anything.

The Morning of the Wedding

Wedding morning as a bridesmaid is a strange mix of calm and chaos. There’ll be hair and makeup appointments, probably a breakfast spread someone thought to organise, and at least one moment where something small goes wrong and everyone quietly fixes it.

Your job is to stay steady. Help the bride into her dress when the time comes. Make sure the flower girls aren’t drawing on each other. Keep an eye on the timeline so nobody’s running behind. And most importantly, remind the bride to eat something before the ceremony. She’ll thank you for that later.

Don’t Forget to Enjoy It

It’s easy to get so caught up in the logistics that you forget to actually enjoy the day. You’ve been chosen because you matter to this person, and that’s a really lovely thing. Take a breath before the ceremony starts. Soak in the walk down the aisle. Dance until your feet hurt at the reception.

Being a bridesmaid for the first time sounds like a lot, but once you’ve done it, you’ll realise it was one of the best experiences you’ve had. And you’ll have the photos (and the group chat memories) to prove it.
