Smoked haddock fish cake with poached egg
When I first started posting restaurant
reviews one of the first places I featured and which has become basically my
second home on weekends for my banana bread fix was St Ali, my Australian
brunch venue of choice ( check out the review here). Since then I have not only been back for way too many
times to keep count of but they have also changed their name to Workshop Coffee
and have started serving dinner in the evenings. It took me a while to get
around to sampling the evening menu and I wasn’t sure how the laid-back
atmosphere would translate in the evening but was pleasantly surprised when I
did finally try it out this Friday. With big candles on the tables the anyway
beautifully conceived interior design really shines through and like on their
brunch menu options here are fresh, quirky and well presented. I opted for the
smoked haddock fish cake with a poached egg and tomato sauce on top with a side
of roast potatoes served with a tangy chipotle mayo while my friend tried the
popular Dexter burger which is also on the brunch menu and has always received
rave reviews from friends (and my mum) who have tried it. Of course with my
extremely sweet tooth I was never going to not have dessert especially with my
near addiction to their banana bread (with extra pots of toppings on the side).
The ginger pudding with raspberry mascarpone and hot toffee sauce was basically
a dessert interpretation of the banana bread with a very interesting and
refreshing raspberry infused mascarpone, not your usual dessert but one that I
will definitely have again. Workshop coffee is the perfect neighbourhood
restaurant and while rammed at weekends, with many still unaware that you can
have good value dinner here for now laid back, spacious and with a far too
rarely found reservation system for the evenings that make it a stress free
dining experience.
